Mr. Gutierrez joined the music faculty in 1995 as director of Commercial Music, Composition and Music Technology. He teaches students on equipment used in commercial music, such as digital audio recording formats, MIDI keyboards, controllers and tone modules, computer sequencing and notation, computer software and hardware in both Windows and Macintosh operating platforms. He has taught varying levels of music theory courses, sight singing, jazz piano, directed the university jazz singers, and jazz to rock courses in his tenure at UTEP. He recently assumed directorship of the El Paso Community College Jazz ensemble.
Mr. Gutierrez professional career includes several levels of music production in El Paso recording studios and studios in Los Angeles, Chicago, and Mexico City. He is a MIDI keyboard and tone module consultant and has performed recorded and transcribed music for Telarc International , Rio Grande Records, Shade Records, and various independent productions.
Solo productions include “beveled Facets” CD released 2000, “Reposado-Ruben Gutierrez Trio Live at Piano City” released 2003, and in 2008 released a UTEP Performance on DVD entitled “My Story” which includes supplemental interviews on aspects of Mr. Gutierrez and his musical career.
As a clinician he has adjudicated solos, orchestra, choir, jazz band, jazz orchestra, and wind ensemble in all major districts in El Paso. Lectures include treatments on varied music styles and the piano/keyboard at University of Arizona in Tucson, UT San Antonio, numerous radio interviews, and the Conservatorio de Bellas Artes in Chihuahua Mexico. Performances/Lectures in major venues internationally including, El Paso Music Under the Stars, Jazz in The Canyon, Jazz on the Rocks, Las Cruces Art in the Park, La Vina Jazz and Blues festival, and the Mesilla Jazz Festival. “Legends of Western Swing” in Snyder and Wichita falls Texas, Corpus Christi Jazz festival, Fuego y Alma arts festival in Denton TX, Padres Jazz in Marfa TX.
Recent performances also included performing with noted musicians Ernie Watts, Chris Vadala, Ritchie Cole, the Temptations, and the Harry James Orchestra.
Mr. Gutierrez performs regularly with his group “The Latin Jazz Exchange” throughout the country and locally. Locally he is on call with local jazz, rock, country, blues groups. Mr. Gutierrez accompanies soloist and currently is staff accompanist with the Young El Paso Singers, and Studio Metropolis Spanish classical dance studio. Recent performances also include the El Paso Brass Quintet, and the El Paso Youth Choir.
Ruben is currently working on a Suite for piano and small ensemble, Wife Monica Gutierrez first Jazz CD release, and a CD featuring his Big Band jazz arrangements.
